BIO
Joana Carvalhas is a multi-style musician actively performing and teaching in Europe, the United States of America and the United Kingdom, graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (UK).
Joana constantly explores new musical styles and new concepts in order to approach innovative sounds and textures on the violin. More than a violinist, she describes herself as a whole musician using the violin to express and enjoy her music.
Despite her classical music education, Joana has developed her improvisation, jazz and composition skills and has been presenting a solo unique project of original music for loop station and violin. During her musical career she has been performing in jazz concerts/festivals, classical style concerts (solo, chamber music, recitals, orchestra), Mariachi band, rock projects, metal festivals, circus shows, fashion events, and records often for other musicians and projects (session musician).
She started her violin studies at the age of six in Academia do Orfeão de Ovar. She was subsequently admitted in Escola Profissional de Música de Espinho (Portugal, 2012), completed a bachelor in Music in University of Aveiro (Portugal, 2016) while was also attended some jazz classes in Escola de Jazz do Porto (Portugal). Finally, she earned a master's degree in Violin Performance by the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (UK, 2021).
Joana has simultaneously been developing a teaching career, in one to one lessons format or through Skype/Zoom. She prepares her violin students to different types of exams, auditions or 'just' shares the magic of Music in our contemporary society. She also approaches improvisation during her classes in order to offer a more complete music education method.
During her performances, the audience never knows quite what to expect - a result of her creativity on stage and her new ways of experiencing and expressing the Music. A mix of sound landscapes, textures, memories and impressions...
